BROUKAR was founded in 2007 in Damascus, Syria. The group is composed of five musicians including one Dervish Whirling Dancer. Together they emphasize the authentic interpretations of traditional maqam music, its compositional and improvisational techniques that are unique to non-Western musical culture. They explore classical, neo-classical and popular maqam music with the revival of the musical heritage of the Middle East.

The city of Damascus has long been one of the Arab World’s centres for culture and artistic innovation, especially in the field of classical Arab music. The group plays traditional Arab music (singing and instrumental music), with secular and sacred topics as well. Indeed, Sufi music comes from Sufism, a practice of Islam, and is directly associated with the Whirling Dervish dance. This dance is based primarily on the rotation and hand movements in praise of God.

The dervish ceremony represents a mystical journey of man’s spiritual ascent through mind and love to “Perfection”. This is the dervish way of conveying God’s spiritual gift to the people. Revolving around the heart, from right to left, he embraces all of mankind, all of creation with affection and love. It starts with an eulogy to the Prophet, who represents love, and all Prophets before him. To praise them is praising God, who created all of them.

Brocade (which is pronounced in Arabic as Broukar) is the name of an ancient handmade precious fabric decorated with silver and golden threads. Patterns are mainly inspired by and derived from the Syrian environment. Syria in general, Damascus in specific, was very famous for these kinds of handcrafts because of its location on the historical Silk Road route.

The musicians are all performers from Arabic bands, who also teach Arab music and have studied at the prestigious High Institute of Music in Damascus.

Broukar participated in:

  • Village du Monde, Paleo Festival, Nyon 2012.
  • Asia-Pacific Traditional Arts Festival, Taiwan 2011

The Ensemble Broukar has been invited in July 2013 to the Young Euro Classic Festival in Berlin, from there the trio is going to Badenweiler to give this concert.
